Major, Minor

Students may develop a self-designed major when they have an interest in an intellectual issue that is best studied through an integrative approach based in multiple academic disciplines. A self-designed major has the same characteristics of an established major, in that it introduces the student to the field of study, addresses appropriate methodology, provides opportunities for advanced level research or other creative projects, and culminates in an integrative experience. The major should also be developed with a consideration to the range of post-graduate study or career opportunities it will establish for the student. Students work with two or more faculty members to design a course of study for the proposed major that combines work in several departments. In most cases, the proposal is developed during the sophomore year and a self-designed major must be submitted to the Curriculum Committee for approval.
