Pre-Professional & Cooperative Program

How we work

  1. We work toward the strongest degree possible. With our "3-2" dual-degree program, our students complete two degrees in five years—a bachelor of arts at Knox and a bachelor of engineering degree from Washington University in St. Louis; Columbia University in New York; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York; or the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (or another engineering school that's a better fit).
  2. Five years. Two unique experiences. Knox students gain a strong background in the sciences with small classes and research opportunities, along with the the chance to explore other interests, like athletics, the arts, and study abroad. Then it's on to engineering school to undertake specialized studies in a focused field.
  3. We're flexible. Students aren't required to commit to engineering until the spring of their junior year (unlike at a school of engineering), offering plenty of time to explore options and make thoughtful decisions. And every engineering student receives guidance from a pre-engineering advisor who provides support, information, and guidance every step of the way.
  4. Our students are ready for the next step. In the 20 years that the 3-2 program has existed, every student accepted into an engineering school has finished the program.
  5. Our students succeed. Dual-degree students are sought out by employers, who are looking for exactly what Knox's liberal arts education can offer: a strong science background paired with excellent writing and communication skills.

How we learn

Dual degree students typically major in physics, chemistry, mathematics, or computer science at Knox, although biology, biochemistry, economics, or environmental studies are appropriate majors for certain engineering specialties.

Students in the dual degree program spend three years at Knox, followed by two years in an engineering program at a cooperating institution. Available engineering specialties at the cooperating institutions include:
