Collegiate athletes experience common stressors like other students, but also have additional responsibilities to their sport on and off the field. Because athletes are commonly thought of as examples of good health, mental illness is often overlooked or seen only through its impact on athletic performance. While remaining physically active does support mental health, wellness for student-athletes is a much larger picture.
The pressures of being a collegiate athlete could put a student at risk of eating disorders, depression, anxiety, or more. We encourage Knox athletes to explore our resource pages and our "When Should I see a Counselor?" page to help evaluate potential need for counseling. If you are an athlete wondering if counseling is right for you, feel free to schedule an intake appointment or a consultation to discuss those concerns. Advocating for your own health and wellness can help remove the stigma preventing other athletes from seeking help as well.
If you are concerned or unsure about your mental health or wellness, please schedule an appointment with Counseling Services by calling 309.341.7492.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, come to Counseling Services during business hours. After business hours call Campus Safety (309.341.7979) or call 9-1-1. Click Crisis Sessions for more information.
