The Knox Service Award, established in 1987, is given to any member of the Knox community to recognize outstanding volunteer service benefiting Knox College. Awards are presented during Homecoming Convocation. Annual nominations are due by January 31.
Maurice Harris '08
Even as a student Maurice Harris, Class of 2008, understood the importance of being involved. He was a member of the Knox Ambassadors, Student Senate, the Senior Challenge Committee, and Model UN and served as an RA.
Maurice has continued to be involved with the Bastian Family Career Center and our students since his graduation. He returned to campus to participate in annual mock interviews and as a panelist and presenter for the Career iMPACT Summit. He has been a valuable resource and role model for all students, but especially those interested in career paths in economic development.
Maurice is a Mentor for KAMP (Knox Alumni Mentoring Program), an at large member of the Alumni Council, a member of the Young Alumni Steering Committee, and a "star" donor, meaning he has given to Knox every year since graduating. He helped plan the Class of 2008 5th Year Reunion. Most recently, Maurice has taken an active role as leader for the Twin Cities Knox Club and is helping plan alumni gatherings in that area.
In the Twin Cities community, Maurice serves on the board of directors for the Minnesota Court Appointed Special Advocates and is a volunteer for Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership. He is a 2017 graduate of the Leadership Saint Paul program.
Nalini Prakash Hart '03
Nalini Prakash Hart, Class of 2003, is a great resource for the Bastian Family Career Center and Knox students. During her time at Deloitte & Touche, she recommended and interviewed students for summer internships and fulltime positions. One student was offered an internship and a full time position subsequent to graduating in 2006.
As an employee of KPMG, she encouraged the hiring of liberal arts candidates and, as a result, Nalini interviewed students for full-time vacancies at KPMG in October 2014 and, subsequently, hired a 2014 graduate and a 2015 graduate.
Nalini has returned to campus to participate in the Carlin Career Development Forum Panel, to conduct mock interviews, and review resumes with students. In addition, she conducted workshops on maximizing one's impact during the job search process and led a workshop for international students. In December 2014, Nalini participated in the Career iMPACT Summit.
Nalini is KPMG's tax group liaison to the KPMG Family For Literacy charity's external fundraising committee, responsible for securing donations from the firm's clients. The chapter's 2017 goal is to donate more than 200,000 books within the Chicago community, with a goal to donate its one-millionth book by 2020.
Joyce Hertko '82
Joyce Hertko, Class of 1982, served on the Alumni Council for six years and provided strong leadership as its chair from 2011 to 2013. During that time, she worked with fellow Council members and the Bastian Family Career Center to bring students and alumni together for interview practice and networking opportunities. She also served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 2013 to 2015 as the Alumni Council representative. Joyce's professional experience in higher education gives her a unique perspective as an alumni volunteer. Advancement staff appreciate the input she provides on various projects and programs.
Joyce helped planned the Class of 1982 25th Year Reunion and represented Knox as a delegate at the installation of Butler University's 21st president. She worked with Brian Williams '86 to plan an Indianapolis Knox Club gathering so that area alumni had the opportunity to meet President Amott in her early days at Knox. Joyce served on the Campaign Advisory Committee in 2012, and is a loyal member of the President's Circle.
In her local community, she served as a volunteer for the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon and the Indiana University Little 500 Bicycle Races. She has been a board member for the Indiana Canine Assistance Network and the Indiana Health Advocacy Coalition. Joyce is an active volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul.
Gary Moses '65
Gary Moses, Class of 1965, served two terms as a member of the Alumni Council, continually urging fellow members to work toward expanding the ways in which alumni can serve the College.
As a Career Services volunteer, Gary and his wife, Marilyn, opened their home during the summers of 2014 and 2015 to six Knox students who earned internships at a business owned by Eric Miller, Class of 2002. For many years, he participated in mock interviews, a joint Alumni Relations/Bastian Family Career Center event aimed at providing students with information on interviewing skills and the benefits of networking. Gary and Marilyn hosted four alumni gatherings at their home and are regular attendees at Fifty Year Club gatherings in Florida and Knox Club events in Denver. Gary has attended most all of his Class Reunions, earning him the title of "Reunion Rat" by his classmates. He is a loyal member of the President's Circle.
With Wendel Swan, Gary co-chaired the Class of 1965 50th Reunion. The class ultimately raised the largest class gift, earned an all-time top three participation rate, and garnered the most attendees of any 50th Reunion to date. The Class of 1965 will be long be remembered for their achievements during Homecoming 2015.
