Bennington, NE

Major in Biochemistry, Minor in Spanish

Jordyn shadowed doctors and experienced Spanish culture through a health education program in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Jordyn used the Power of Experience Grant for her shadowing experience in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Jordyn used the Power of Experience Grant to fund additional expenses that are often associated with off-campus study programs. The grant provides all incoming Knox students with up to $2,000 to support a qualifying experiential learning opportunity.

Tell us about your off-campus study experience.

For seven weeks, I was in Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, Mexico, through Child Family Health International. I observed doctors in the city of Puerto Escondido in the mornings and took Spanish classes to learn the language in the evenings.

This experience confirmed for me that I want to go into the medical field, and that I want to continue learning the Spanish language and about the culture. After Knox, I plan to go to medical school, hopefully to specialize in women's reproductive and sexual health. Through Knox, I was also able to become certified in mental health first aid and have also utilized the Pre-Health advisor, who has been extremely helpful.

How did you use your Power of Experience grant?

I was able to apply the grant to my program fee because I was not obtaining any Knox credit for the program. I do not believe I would have been able to afford my program without the grant.

What activities do you participate in on campus and how have they influenced your experience?

As a Dare2Care peer educator, I have learned a tremendous amount about healthy relationships, sexual assault, and sexual health. I have a huge interest in helping women and their sexual health because of this experience. It has also allowed me to have healthy conversations with people in the Knox community about these hard topics.

As a member of Pi Beta Phi, I have gained leadership experience and friendships that will last a lifetime. I cannot imagine my college experience without joining Pi Beta Phi. It has allowed me to have the confidence to speak publicly and take on other leadership roles within the Knox community.

At Knox, Jordyn is also a Red Room tutor and a Student Visit Ambassador.
