What We Do

Our Center works with Knox College students and alumni to help them discover and successfully pursue career opportunities, including jobs, internships, graduate and professional programs, gap year experiences, and short-term postgraduate programs. The Bastian Family Center for Career Success is part of the Division of Student Development

  • We work with all students, first-year – seniors, plus alumni, providing online and in-person resources and tools, programming and initiatives designed to help students pursue their individual goals based on their specific interests
  • We provide assistance on a walk-in as well as appointment basis
  • We proactively partner with student groups, faculty and staff, alumni, employers and graduate programs
  • We emphasize the importance of experiential pursuits, networking and research for success
  • We help students learn to tell their story: why they chose their major, what skills they are developing in their educational and co-curricular experiences, and how those skills translate to the world of work
  • We continuously update programs, assistance and our advice to reflect an ever-changing environment in the world of work

Our Guiding Philosophy

  • We do not define a career path for an individual student; we help them discover that path for themselves
  • Liberal arts students are developing the skills employers are seeking; our job is to help students realize, define and market those skills as they explore opportunities
  • Strong partnerships with academic disciplines, student organizations, alumni and parents are of paramount importance to our success
  • We strongly suggest students begin to participate in our programs and take advantage of our resources and services in their first year at Knox.  We know the earlier students begin the career selection, experimentation and preparation process, the more likely they will be to have settled on a positive outcome by graduation
  • We believe in the power of experience; essentially, if a student has not experienced what a career is like, they cannot be sure they will enjoy it.  To that end we strive to provide a wide variety of experiential opportunities for students
  • The world of work is in a state of constant change; we ensure students are aware they are preparing for a world in which their future career/job/industry may not yet exist
  • Career assistance should not end at graduation; we are happy to work with alumni on career transitions and searches of all types
