For the first time, the Prairie Fire men's and women's soccer teams both qualified for the Midwest Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 31, when they each defeated Cornell College. It was a shutout on both fronts in the last conference games of the season, the women taking Cornell with a score of 6-0, the men following with a final score of 7-0.
The women finished fourth in the conference and will play first seed Lake Forest College at Lake Forest on Friday, November 6, at 2 p.m. The winner will play the victor of the Carroll University vs. St. Norbert College game on Saturday at noon at Lake Forest.
The men finished second in the conference and will play Carroll at St. Norbert on Friday, November 6, at 1:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of the St. Norbert vs. Lake Forest game on Saturday at noon at St. Norbert.
The women finished the season with a record of 12-4-2, setting a record for wins in a season. This is the first time the team has earned a spot in the Midwest Conference tournament since 1995. "I'm immensely proud of their achievements," said head coach Paul Lawrence, whose team includes 29 first-years, six sophomores, and two juniors. After the team's win against Grinnell early in the season, he knew that—even with a young team—this didn't need to be a building year. "We started to realize that we had a real chance [for a top four finish in the conference] this year and that has been our mentality from the first game. Why do we wait two or three years for it to be our year—why can't it be our first year."
On the men's side, this is the third trip to the conference tournament in as many years, with the Prairie Fire finishing second in the tournament in 2014. The Prairie Fire go into the tournament having already defeated Carroll and Lake Forest and tying St. Norbert in regular season play, finishing the season with a record of 12-2-3. "It would be a different story beating everyone then losing to those three," says Sheikh. "We wouldn't be as confident as we are now."
Men's and women's Midwest Conference tournament games will be broadcast live and on demand. View the schedule and watch the games.
