Soccer Team Wins Academic Award

NSCAA College Team Academic Award Winner

The Prairie Fire men's soccer team is recognized for academic excellence.

Following a record-breaking season, the Knox College Prairie Fire men's soccer team has gained a top academic honor.

Based on the team's grade point average, Knox was selected as one of the 2012-13 College Team Academic Award Winners by the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) of America. College teams that post a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the award. The Knox men's squad received the honor by achieving a 3.18 GPA.

Coached by Matt Edwards, Knox was one just 269 teams to earn the award out of some 800 teams in all three NCAA divisions.

"Recognition from the NSCAA is testimony to the commitment that Knox has to academic excellence, and the specific commitment that this team made from the first day of the season," Edwards said. "Our seniors show great leadership."

Knox men's soccer set records this fall for victories (13), consecutive wins (11), shutouts (9), goals scored (56), assists (42), points (154), and game-winning goals (13).

Junior Sean Dockrell of Dublin, Ireland, established new records for goalie shutouts in a season (9), second-highest in the history of the Midwest Conference; and goals against average (0.77) - the 10th best percentage in MWC history.

Sophomore Nathaniel Logie (Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Queens Royal College) set a record for goals (16), which included five game-winners (tied for #5 MWC history), and a new all-time high for points (37) in a season.

Senior Max Gatyas, who was among the top ten national leaders in assists all year, finished with a school record 13. Sophomore Charlie Harned (Webster Groves, MO, Clayton) set a new mark for assists in a match with five in a 6-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan at home on September 14. The five assists also ties the Midwest Conference record.
