Knox to Host Annual Lincoln Colloquium

Leading historians of Lincoln and the Civil War era, including Rodney Davis, Allen Guelzo, James McPherson, Garry Wills, Douglas Wilson and David Zarefsky, are on the program at the 23rd Annual Lincoln Colloquium, Oct. 11 at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. In addition to lectures about Lincoln and the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, the colloquium will feature exhibits by Lincoln organizations and collectors.

The event ? "Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates" ? is hosted by Knox, whose "Old Main" is the only original building that remains from the historic 1858 debates. The Colloquium is presented by the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College, in cooperation with The Lincoln Home National Historic Site, The Lincoln Museum in Fort Wayne, Indiana, The Indiana Historical Society and The Chicago History Museum.

Registration for the Colloquium is $25. Seating is limited.

• 9:30 a.m. Morning Session ? New Perspectives on the Lincoln-Douglas Debates ? Douglas Wilson, moderator, Co-Director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College, two-time winner of the Lincoln Prize and co-editor of a new book, "The Lincoln-Douglas Debates: The Lincoln Studies Center Edition," the first critical edition of the debate texts.
  • Lecture ? Turning Points in the Galesburg Debate ? David Zarefsky, Professor of Communications at Northwestern University and author of books on rhetoric, public speaking and the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, including the award-winning "Lincoln, Douglas, and Slavery: In the Crucible of Public Debate."
  • Lecture ? The Debates Remembered: The Case of Galesburg ? Rodney Davis, Co-Director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College and co-editor of a new book, "The Lincoln-Douglas Debates: The Lincoln Studies Center Edition," the first critical edition of the debate texts.
  • Lecture ? The Little Men Behind the Curtain: The Committees, Connectors, and Carpenters Who Made the Lincoln-Douglas Debates Happen ? Allen Guelzo, Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era; Director of Civil War Studies at Gettysburg College; and author of numerous books, including the recently published "Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates that Defined America."

• 1:30 p.m. Afternoon Session ? The Debates in American History and Politics ? Douglas Wilson, moderator, Co-Director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College.
  • Lecture ? America in the 1850s ? James M. McPherson, George Henry Davis '86 Professor Emeritus of History at Princeton University and author of numerous books on Lincoln and the Civil War including "Battle Cry of Freedom," which won the Pulitzer Prize, "Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution," and the forthcoming "Abraham Lincoln: A Presidential Life."
  • Lecture ? Electioneering by Debate ? Garry Wills, Professor Emeritus of History at Northwestern University and author of three dozen books on history and religion including "Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words That Remade America," which won the Pulitzer Prize, "Inventing America: Jefferson's Declaration of Independence," and "What the Gospels Meant."
