During his final Knox-Monmouth basketball game, Todd Brown '00 got a special surprise. He found out that he was a new uncle.

Fast-forward 18 years and he is back on campus, not on the basketball court this time, but on the steps of Old Main. Todd and his niece, Makailee Brown, were getting their photo taken with other Knox legacies and their families during move-in day on September 8.

Legacies are students who are following a relative to Knox. This year, 34 new students are legacies.

Makailee is a third-generation legacy. In addition to her uncle, her great-uncle, Richard Wilson '73, also attended Knox.

"It feels great to be in the legacy picture because I was in the legacy picture when I got here," said Todd.

Makailee likes the support that comes with being a legacy. "It's kind of cool because I have that resource that's there for me to ask questions about what the experience is like," she says of her uncle. "He's been there for me and prepared me to come here."

Joining Todd and Makailee in the photo were other family members, including Todd's children, who have a number of years to go before making their college decision.

"We'll see if I'm back here again with my boy or girl."
