A student in the Knox College computer science course Computing, Technology and Society this fall checks the Lego Mindstorm robot that he and his teammate assembled for the final class project. The survey course is designed for students who are not planning to major in computer science, and the robotics component provides a challenging real-world experience in programming technology, explains professor John Dooley. "You see a lot of this in movies, and it looks easy. It's not." Photo by Peter Bailley.

College students took off their clothes and ran around campus... for a good cause! Each time the runners passed a checkpoint, they pulled off something that they were donating to "Shedding for Service," organized by Alpha Phi Omega (APO), the community service fraternity. Jennifer Nass of Galesburg brought her home-schooled son to the Special Collections and Archives in Knox College's Seymour Library to study pre-modern forms of writing this week. Here, they look at two samples of papyrus with hieratic writing, an ancient Egyptian script. In front of them on the table is a small Middle Eastern cylinder seal. Photograph by Peter Bailley.

"This is what your lie looks like!" one student exclaimed, as lab partners watch a computer display of data from a student, at right, whose finger is hooked up to a skin galvanometer -- a.k.a. a "lie detector." Student lab assistant Michael Kolbeck (standing at rear) explained that the lab is designed to build experience with real-world data gathering into intro-level psychology courses.
