Knox Fund Surpasses Goal, Raises More Than $3 Million for Knox College

Over the 2009-10 fiscal year (July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010), the Knox Fund raised more than $3 million for Knox College. This is the second largest amount ever raised for the Knox Fund, and the only time the College raised more than $3 million outside of a comprehensive campaign. In total, $3,033,449 was raised from Knox alumni, parents, and friends for the annual operations of the College, against a goal of $2.85 million. The College raised just shy of $10 million in total gifts -- nearly $4 million above last year's total of $6 million.

"To have surpassed our Knox Fund goal during yet another tough economic year is a testament to the generosity of Knox alumni and friends," said President Roger Taylor '63. "Knox would not be able to offer a quality liberal arts education without their continued support."

Recognizing the lingering effects of the nation's most recent recession, including a more than $1 million increase in students' need for financial aid and scholarships, Knox decided to earmark Knox Fund gifts for student financial aid, unless donors chose otherwise. In total, $2,419,958 of the $3 million Knox Fund dollars raised will be designated for financial aid and scholarships.

"The entire Knox community -- faculty, staff, alumni, and friends -- takes the College's mission to provide access to a quality education to all students regardless of race, sex, or means seriously. The focus on raising gifts for scholarships and financial aid is a direct reflection of that mission," adds President Taylor.

While total dollars raised for the College was up for the fiscal year, the total number of donors was down. After setting a record in alumni giving last year with 5,500 alumni donors, Knox received gifts from 4,900 alumni this year. Total donors to the College were 9,000, compared to 9,400 last year.

"We truly appreciate the fact that even though we had fewer donors this year, we were able to exceed our Knox Fund goal. It is a reflection of the loyalty and generosity of our alumni and friends. Given the economic climate, we're very happy with the generosity shown toward Knox," said Beverly Holmes, vice president for Advancement. "We hope that those who did not give this year will include us again in their philanthropy in the future."
