Knox College celebrates Black History Month 2012 with events both on and off-campus. Activities in Galesburg include entertainment featuring hip-hop poet Black Ice and performances by Knox College students and lectures by Owen Muelder, director of the Galesburg Colony Underground Railroad Freedom Station at Knox College.
Black History Month events at Knox are sponsored by the student club ABLE—Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality.

Saturday, February 18; 7 p.m.
Performance: Black Ice. Poet and hip-hop performer Black Ice was featured in Russell Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, which won a 2003 Tony Award for Best Theatrical Event. He has appeared on BET, NBC, VH1 and HBO's Def Poetry Jam. Student performances begin at 7 p.m., followed by Black Ice at 8 p.m. Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. Sponsored by ABLE. Free and open to the public.
Wednesday, February 22; 7 p.m.
Lecture: "Knox College, Abolitionism and The Underground Railroad," by Owen Muelder, director of the Galesburg Colony Underground Railroad Freedom Station at Knox College and author of two books about the anti-slavery movement. ABLE Center for Black Culture, 168 W. Tompkins, Galesburg. Sponsored by ABLE. Free and open to the public.
Tuesday, February 28, 6:30 p.m.
Lecture: "Theodore Dwight Weld and the American Anti-Slavery Society," by Owen Muelder, director of the Galesburg Colony Underground Railroad Freedom Station at Knox College and author of two books about the anti-slavery movement. Founded at Knox in 1968, ABLE promotes awareness in the Knox and Galesburg communities of issues that impact people of African descent. Its activities have included hosting the local Boys and Girls Club (below) in Knox's Seymour Library and helping them prepare Black History Month projects.
