Knox Celebrates 180th Anniversary

Alumni take a photo in the purple and gold with Knox's mascot, Blaze.

Knox College will celebrate the 180th anniversary of its founding on Wednesday, February 15, with events and opportunities for the entire Knox community to participate in the celebration. Here are four ways to get involved:

  1. Wear Purple & Gold. Post a photo of yourself wearing purple and gold and post to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #KnoxProud.
  2. Sing Happy Birthday. Join President Teresa Amott in Taylor Lounge at 4 p.m. on February 15 to toast Knox's birthday with cookies and song. Can't make it to the festivities? Watch live on Knox's Facebook channel.
  3. Help us continue to meet our historic mission. For 180 hours—until midnight on February 15—gifts to Knox of any size will be matched with an additional $180. There's no better time to show support for a transformative Knox education. Give now.
  4. Honor alumni achievements. Four alumnae will be honored with Alumni Achievement Awards during Founders Day Convocation at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 17, in Seymour Library's Muelder Room: teacher Harriet Drew Barringer '58, teacher and midwife Rebecca Hollmeyer Ullman '70, CEO and author Jane Strode Miller '81, and public health leader Luella Williams '06.

Knox College was officially established on February 15, 1837, when the Illinois General Assembly granted a charter to what then was Knox Manual Labor College. The Rev. George Washington Gale and other social reformers had moved from upstate New York to found the college and a town on the prairies of western Illinois. Learn more about Knox's history.
