In Memoriam: Lisa Steinbach

Cherished Knox College Payroll Coordinator Lisa Steinbach passed away on December 1, 2023, after serving as a critical member of the business department for over 35 years. Her commitment, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication made her an invaluable member of the College community.

Lisa was responsible for processing payroll for thousands of faculty, staff, and students over her tenure at Knox. Her role was pivotal in ensuring that everyone received their due compensation accurately and on time. Her meticulous approach ensured the financial security of each individual, contributing to the overall stability of our institution. She played a crucial role in counseling employees, students, parents, and department supervisors with payroll-related questions. Her ability to communicate complex information was instrumental in creating transparency and trust within the community.

Lisa's impact was not confined to the walls of our payroll office; it resonated throughout the Knox community. Her contributions were fundamental to the smooth functioning of the College’s financial processes.

“Lisa’s presence will be missed by everyone on campus,” Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer Alec Guroff said. “Her ability to navigate Knox’s payroll processes, provide institutional knowledge, and maintain a strong personal touch when dealing with everyone across campus has been an incredible resource for me, for our office, and the Knox community.”

Lisa held a deep affection for her children and husband and delighted in traveling with them, embarking on several memorable trips together in the past year, all in the spirit of cherishing their time together. She found joy in baking and cooking for her kids and particularly enjoyed dressing them up during Halloween when they were younger to enjoy the festivities around town.

In her free time, Lisa actively attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and played a significant role in the Galesburg Catholic community, beginning during her children's enrollment at Costa Catholic Academy. When possible, she made time to enjoy nature and loved interacting with the squirrels around Knox’s campus.

“Our office lost a core member of our team and family today. Lisa wasn’t just a coworker, she was a friend. Friends for 34 and 21 years, we watched each other’s kids grow and our families navigate blessings and struggles. We’ve shared tears and laughter together. Our heart is broken for her family and all of us who loved her. She gave her all to Knox for 35 years and her absence will definitely be felt across campus. Please keep her family and friends in your prayers,” Knox College AP, Loan, and Purchasing Manager Melody Diehl and Knox College Controller Angela Hopping shared.

Lisa leaves behind a legacy at the College through her warm and approachable personality, extensive institutional expertise, and unwavering dedication to Knox. She will be greatly missed.
