Haslem and Bailey Appointments Announced

Knox College has appointed Lori Haslem, associate professor of English, to the position of associate dean of the College. She will succeed Stephen Bailey who has served as associate dean since 1984 -- the longest serving associate dean in Knox's history. Bailey has been appointed director of Knox's new Center for Research and Advanced Study. Both appointments are effective January 1, 2010.

As associate dean, Haslem will work with Lawrence Breitborde, dean of the College and vice president for academic affairs, in the areas of academic advising, the College Honor Code, and other programs.

"Professor Haslem is recognized by her colleagues and students as an excellent scholar and teacher and an informed campus citizen," Breitborde said. "She will bring all her energy, talent, and good judgment to this position, and I look forward to working with her."

A member of the Knox faculty since 1996, Haslem is also currently serving as chair of the English Department. She will retain her faculty position in the English department, but will step down as chair. An expert in Shakespeare and Renaissance literature, Haslem has written chapters for Approaches To Teaching Renaissance Drama, an anthology published by the Modern Language Association; and The Female Body in Professional Encounter, British Gynecology, 1500-1800, forthcoming from Liverpool University Press; as well as articles in scholarly publications, including English Language Notes, and the MLA journal Profession; and a number of entries for The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Folktales and Fairy Tales.

Haslem earned a bachelor's degree at Purdue University, a master's degree at the University of Illinois-Urbana, and a doctorate at University of Denver. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and winner of the 2001 Philip Green Wright - Lombard College Prize, a Knox College award for distinguished teaching. At Knox, Haslem has served on a number of committees, including the faculty committee on Academic Standing, and on the Broadcast, Internet and Publications Board.

Bailey is the longest serving associate dean in Knox history. As director of the Center for Research and Advanced Study, which is being established through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, he will coordinate advanced undergraduate research in all fields on campus, including the College's renowned Honors Program. On September 11, 2008, he was honored at the College's opening convocation for his more than 40 years of service to the College.

"Steve Bailey has provided experienced leadership to Knox's multi-faceted program for engaging students in independent research and creative endeavors, and in faculty-student collaborations," Breitborde said. "This appointment is an outgrowth of that leadership and allows the College to expand opportunities available to students who are interested in independent, advanced study," Breitborde added. Knox annually awards more than $250,000 in college and external grant funds to support student research and independent study projects. The College Honors Program has been cited by the federal Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education as one of two model programs in the nation for successful undergraduate research. These programs have been overseen by Bailey as associate dean and will now move with him to the new Center for Research and Advanced Study.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
