Knox graduate plans to 'cultivate a culture of learning'

Recent Knox College graduate Christian Mahone ‘11, who will begin his teaching career in the fall, is profiled in "Teacher Tuesdays," a new United States Department of Education-sponsored blog series that spotlights young teachers.Christian Mahone

Mahone, from Chicago, Illinois, will teach fifth grade at Nielson Elementary School in Galesburg, Illinois, instructing students in language arts, math, social studies, and science.

An elementary education major at Knox, Mahone also had two minors: in anthropology and sociology and in urban society. He received the 2011 Christopher E. Johnson award, which goes to the graduating senior "who best exemplifies the qualities needed in a great teacher: character, tenacity, dedication, and a positive attitude."

A teacher is "someone who can change lives in a greater way," Mahone says in the blog, which describes his plan to "cultivate a culture of learning" among his students.

Each week during the summer, the blog profiles a different young teacher. Mahone's profile was posted on July 19.

Stephen Schroth, Knox College assistant professor of educational studies, nominated Mahone to be profiled in "Teacher Tuesdays" because of his work to provide Junior Great Books training to middle-school students.
