Tim Heimann Court was the home for Knox's Basketball Homecoming on January 26. Following a half-court scrimmage, men on one side, women on the other, the teams played a full-court scrimmage. Cheering on the alumni were current members of the men's and women's basketball squads.
Roles were reversed following the scrimmage, with alumni taking the stands to cheer on the Prairie Fire as the men's and women's teams took on St. Norbert. The men fell to the Green Knights while the women made Knox history, capturing their first-ever victory since the two teams began playing each other in 1984.
The day wrapped up with a pizza party at Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar for alumni, players, and members of the K Club, Knox's athletic booster club.
"It was nice to reconnect with some of my former players and meet other Knox basketball alumni," said Emily Cline, head women's basketball coach. "It was a great opportunity for the current players to meet alums and share stories of Knox and playing basketball at Knox."
Kevin Walden '01, head men's basketball coach, added, "I'm very glad to see Basketball Homecoming back on the schedule and am excited for its future. I'm confident that we can build upon this year's Reunion and have a great Knox Basketball Homecoming on a yearly basis."
Read a few of the responses from alumni about the event:
Steve Hopkins '82
"Well, the court's a lot longer than when I played -- I don't know when that change was made. I wish there were a few more people of roughly my vintage here, but maybe next year they'll make it back. It was good to see people I hadn't seen in several years and to be back at the K and run up and down a little bit."
Monique Robertson '03
"I hadn't been back in five years, but I'm always excited to come when I have the opportunity. Knox is such a small community. I feel like you know somebody who knew somebody, especially if you did athletics. It's always fun, and I definitely encourage others to get back."
Donny Moore '07
"The court felt fantastic. They did a great job on it. There was a second there where I thought that I was going to pass out, but it was fun . . . to come back to see some of the newer guys, the recent graduates, the older guys, the girls. It's fantastic to get together, come together, and support the basketball team and the strong tradition we have."
Kathleen Meyers O'Neill '98
"It's neat to be able to tell people that I'm going back for Homecoming and actually playing, as opposed to just watching. It's fun to see everybody."
Jesse Temple '07
"These were four of the best years of my life. I'll always feel like a part of the program for as long as I live, so I'll try to come back as often as I can."
