Following a nationwide search, Knox College has appointed Dr. Anne Ehrlich as vice president for student development. Dr. Ehrlich currently serves as dean of students at Woodbury University, a small, private university just north of Los Angeles, California, a position she has held since 2007.
"Dr. Ehrlich's commitment to a holistic and inclusive student experience and her record of serving first-generation and underrepresented students make her an ideal candidate for this position," says Knox College President Teresa L. Amott. "The vice president of student development is a critical position on a college campus, entrusted with ensuring that our students' co-curricular experiences are as rich, rewarding, and educational as their curricular ones. I look forward to Dr. Ehrlich's arrival and the work she will do with our students and her staff."
"I am honored and thrilled to be joining the Knox community," said Dr. Ehrlich upon her appointment. "It was clear to me early in the search process that Knox is a special place committed to each student's success. I'm looking forward to immersing myself in the life of the campus and working collaboratively to help students transform their lives."
Dr. Anne Ehrlich received her bachelor's degree in psychology from University of California, San Diego, a master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate in educational leadership from University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to her work at Woodbury University, Dr. Ehrlich held positions in residential life and student life at Whittier College and the University of Michigan. In both of those roles, she collaborated extensively with faculty and academic administrators in the development of residential learning communities and faculty-in-residence programs.
As dean of students at Woodbury, a Department of Education designated Hispanic-serving institution, Dr. Ehrlich oversees health and counseling services, residential life, student involvement and leadership, student conduct, international student programs, parent programs, and assessment. She also serves as adjunct faculty in Woodbury's Master of Leadership Program, chairs Woodbury's behavioral intervention team, has participated in numerous threat assessments, and has developed and published guidelines for responding to students of concern. She is well-respected among faculty and often consults on classroom management, particularly regarding special populations including international students and students with disabilities. With expertise in assessment and as a member and recent chair of the university-wide educational planning committee, she developed a co-curricular program to review standards that parallel those used for academic departments. She led student development staff in the implementation of student learning outcomes at the division, department, and program level and mentors staff in the use of assessment measures to document co-curricular student learning.
Dr. Ehrlich's professional affiliations have included membership in and service to the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I), and the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors (NAFSA). She has presented nationally on topics including collaboration between academic and student affairs, behavioral intervention, and assessment in student affairs, and has consulted on the development of residential learning communities, alcohol and sexual assault education programs, and social justice initiatives.
"The search committee is to be commended for their time and energy in the search for our new vice president of student development, Dr. Anne Ehrlich. Throughout our process, students, staff, and faculty advocated for a strong leader who understands the opportunities at a diverse liberal arts college," said Laura Behling, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College, who co-chaired the search committee with Jeff Grace, assistant professor of theatre. "It's clear that Dr. Ehrlich will bring a wealth of knowledge and successful experiences working with college students, and I look forward to continuing to develop the partnership between Academic Affairs and Student Development."
Dr. Ehrlich will assume her role at Knox on March 1.
