Born and raised in Galesburg, Illinois, Gabriel Moreno watched the 2004 closure of the local Maytag refrigerator manufacturing plant. Starting in 2014, this history became a generative social and material history for his work. Moreno’s exhibit, Alloy, invokes this to explore what industrial narratives have become in the last ten years, and to ask questions about memory, preservation, and endings.
Gabriel Moreno ‘14, received his MFA from the University of Chicago in 2016. His work has been exhibited in Chicago and regionally, most recently at the National Museum of Mexican Art, the University of Chicago, Produce Model Gallery, and Weinberg Newton Gallery. He has worked for Theaster Gates Studio, Rebuild Foundation, and Arts and Public Life, and is the founder of the design-build firm Poco Projects LLC. He currently lives and works in Chicago.
