The Knox Service Award, established in 1987, is given to members of the Knox community in recognition of outstanding volunteer service benefiting Knox College. Awards are presented during the Homecoming Convocation. Annual nominations are due by February 1.
David Bates '78
David has been serving as the 1978 class correspondent for the past 20 years. He has been a member of Reunion committees, served on the Knox Fund’s Steering Committee, and supported Fiji's 150th anniversary Reunion in 2017. Prior to moving to Colorado, he was a regular at Knox alumni events in the Houston area.
David also served students by returning to Knox to speak to pre-law students at the request of Professor Lane Sunderland.
In his professional career he was elected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America in the field of Litigation – Environmental, and he was recognized as AVPreeminent 5.0 out of 5 Peer Review Rated, Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings.
Howell "Chip" Evans ’68
Chip’s extraordinary enthusiasm for the 1968 50th Reunion helped draw the largest number of classmates to a Reunion in recent history. He established a Facebook page several years prior to his 50th Reunion to create excitement about the event and he continues to maintain the page with almost daily updates.
As a 50th Reunion co-chair, he called and wrote notes to classmates, teammates, fraternity brothers, and friends to urge them to attend the 50th Reunion and to support the class gift. He issued giving challenges and matched Reunion gifts dollar for dollar.
He also served Knox as a class agent, served on the Alumni Achievement Award selection committee, and served as a volunteer for peer screening and leadership discussions. He also supports the Fifty Year Club (FYC) by collecting alumni histories which is part of the mission of the club.
James Foley ’78
James has mentored more than 90 Knox students since 2017, including students and teams enrolled in Knox StartUp Term. He also judged the final project pitches during StartUp Term. He has been the speaker for multiple career related events hosted by the Bastian Family Center for Career Success from 2016 to the present.
James was the keynote speaker for a Chicago Knox Business Club event in 2018, and he continues to mentor numerous international students at Knox on issues related to international trade, career opportunities, and small business development. He continues to serve as a volunteer for the Knox Business Intensive Seminar as he has for the past three years.
He is the author of The Global Entrepreneur and co-author of the 11th edition of International Marketing and serves on a variety of professional and civic organizations.
