You'll have access to all courses of study at the University of Flensburg, making it easy to stay on track with your Knox major/minor. In the past, students have taken courses in history, music, art, environmental studies, textile and fashion design, economics, and more. On-site academic advisors help you select classes appropriate for your preparation at Knox and individual linguistic ability.

You may also take courses at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Flensburg), located right on the University of Flensburg campus. In addition to offering computer science, biotechnology, and traditional engineering courses, the University of Applied Sciences specializes in green engineering, renewable energy engineering, and environmental management. Additionally, you'll have access to the International Management Baccalaureate program -- a great opportunity if you're interested in business, economics, or related fields.

Academic Support

While students are fully integrated into the University of Flensburg, you'll also have a robust support network like what you experience at Knox. Students benefit from a system of linguistic and academic support courses and workshops, similar to American-style student support services. American-style tutoring by graduate student teaching assistants is also available.

The university's International Center also provides academic, linguistic, and social support for international students. To assure Knox students are having the best study abroad experience possible, Knox faculty and staff regularly communicate with Flensburg faculty to discuss and work out any issues related to the exchange.

Excursions

The International Center at the University of Flensburg organizes a number of excursions over the course of the year. Often, these excursions are heavily subsidized, so they are very affordable for students to attend. The excursions are based on your interests and in the past have included weekends in Berlin, a trip to the mud flats, and more.

Facilities

Don't let the town's historical aesthetic fool you; the University of Flensburg's facilities are anything but antiquated. Using the state-of-the-art computer lab, it's easy to get by at the university without your own laptop.

Internships and Research

Students have often combined study in Flensburg with an internship after the semester is over. Contact Professor Todd Heidt, program coordinator, for organizations that could arrange internships in Germany. In technical fields and the sciences, these internships are often paid.

By submitting a proposal for a research project or internship, you may apply for the Eleanor W. Stellyes Fellowship Fund for International Studies, which helps you pay for room and board so you can continue your studies in Flensburg for one month beyond the regular length of the program.

"I liked taking classes in German ... the readings and attending the lectures really expanded my vocabulary." -- Emma Swanson '12
