Workshop Wednesdays are regularly scheduled outreach events hosted by the Dare to Care Peer Educators on the first Wednesday of every month during the academic year. This programming gives the Peer Educators and the Knox community a chance to spend time together doing activities or having conversations. For example, during the fall term of the 2021-22 academic year, the D2C Peer Educators hosted events on better understanding your own identity and on making time for self-care in your life. For the winter term of the same academic year, workshops are planned on discussing the book Sexual Citizens by Jennifer Hirsch and Shamus Khan. If you are interested in the exact topics of these workshops and when they will be held, check out our term calendar here.
Identity Exploration was a Workshop Wednesday event that took place on October 6, 2021; this program was hosted by the Dare to Care Peer Educators and facilitated by Eli Scriver, a Knox student (if you would like to learn more about Eli, click here!). The purpose of this event was to allow attendees an opportunity to self-reflect on the different components of their identities and have conversations about this in small groups. Discussion topics included racial/ethnic identities, sexual identities, and gender identities. Taking Care of You was a Workshop Wednesday event that took place on November 3, 2021. The purpose of this event was to set aside space for intentional self-care and casual conversation with the Dare to Care Peer Educators. The group did activities together, including journaling, bracelet making, coloring, and painting. We additionally discussed the importance of intentional self-care; that is, self-care that is planned and not performed impulsively. For our Workshop Wednesdays during Winter Term 2022, we wanted to take the time to highlight some of the information presented in the book Sexual Citizens: Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus by Shamus Khan and Jennifer Hirsch. This novel is a landmark study focusing on the undergraduate students attending Columbia University. This research has completely altered and shifted the way we are looking at and educating about sexual misconduct and violence, and the Dare to Care Peer Educators want to share all of this information with you! From their work, the authors created three concepts that shape individuals’ experiences surrounding sexual misconduct and violence: sexual projects, sexual geographies, and sexual citizenship. You can learn more about Sexual Citizens on their website, and we encourage you to join us at our workshops covering these three topics during the term to learn more!
