Family and Friends Weekend

We invite you to join us for Family and Friends Weekend, October 8 -10. This is a weekend to enjoy time with your student -- take time to explore Galesburg and the campus environment! Some families will just come for the day on Saturday, while others will enjoy the whole weekend. You will find updated information about the weekend's activities in the Family and Friends Weekend schedule. Student groups are just starting to post their activities for the weekend, so we continue to add new items to the schedule every few days.

You can register online until the afternoon of Thursday, October 7. Family and Friends Weekend is free to all participants; but we would like for you to register for planning purposes. If your plans change at the last minute and you are able to attend, you are very welcome to register on-site when you get to Knox! Check the schedule for registration times.

There are other community events taking place in the Galesburg area that weekend, so be sure to book your accomodations now. Check out our accommodations list for area hotel locations. Knox does not reserve room blocks for Family Weekend at area hotels, so you must take care of your own room arrangements. Some hotels still have availability, but they're going fast!

New Knox Students, Parents Arrive and Then Part Ways

An international student moves to campusAfter the newest Knox College students moved into their residence halls, they and their families gathered near Old Main for official welcomes from President Roger Taylor '63 and Dean Lawrence Breitborde. At the end, students said goodbye to their families and focused on getting to know fellow members of the Knox community.

The day was one of mixed emotions, especially for parents of first-year students. Parents said that while they will miss having their children at home, they're also enthusiastic about the opportunities that Knox is providing.

"It's a big change, but a lot of positive things are going to happen," said Rob Knight of Ferguson, Missouri. His daughter, Laura, just arrived on the Knox campus.

Jim and Janice Stewart of Dousman, Wisconsin, dropped off their daughter, Jordyn. "It'll be difficult for mom," said Janice Stewart, referring to herself. "I'm excited and happy for her, but I'm also sad." Jordyn, who became aware of Knox through one of her teachers, 2000 Knox graduate Abigail Kean, said she was so eager to get to campus that the 3½ hour drive from Wisconsin felt much longer. Knox College Receives Federal Grant for Student Services

TRIO StudentsKnox College's highly successful program to increase the graduation rate of low income and first generation college students is receiving renewed funding amounting to an estimated $1.5 million over the next five years from the United States Department of Education.

The TRIO Achievement Program at Knox has one of the highest graduation and retention rates in the nation, averaging more than 90% for the past four years -- with 96% of participating students this past year either graduated or expected to return in the fall.

College officials recently received notification from U.S. Senator Richard Durbin and U.S. Representative Phil Hare that the Department of Education has awarded Knox's TRIO Achievement Program $312,416 for the 2010-2011 academic year. According to the Department of Education, it is anticipated that the grant will be renewed for a total of five years.

Knox's federally funded TRIO program began in 1973-74, making it one of the longest running in the nation. Read more about the TRIO Achievement Program.

Six Simple Steps for Getting Your Dream Job: Event at Knox on November 3

The Center for Career and Pre-Professional Development, thanks to the John D. Carlin Career Development Support Fund, will present Pete Leibman, current president of Idealize Enterprises, on Wednesday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. Leibman created his company in 2009 so that he could give students and recent graduates the confidence and strategies to achieve career success.

This unique program focuses on how to help students determine what their dream job is, how to create marketing materials and an attitude that will get employers to “buy” them, how to develop and execute a strategic sales plan for getting hired in any industry, and how to network effectively and make a great first impression. Read more about Liebman.

The first 100 students in attendance will receive a free copy of the book, 101 Best Ways to Land a Job in Troubled Times.

Please encourage your son/daughter to take advantage of this opportunity and learn the steps they need to achieve success in their respective career areas.

Students Pick Up the Phone To Support Knox

Phonathon started on September 19 with 36 eager students talking with alumni and parents about what great things Knox has added to their lives and to seek support for the Knox Fund. After just one day, callers raised more than $4,000 for the Knox Fund, compared to a little more than $1,000 last year. At the end of the first week, almost $50,000 had been raised through Phonathon.

The Knox Fund supports every aspect of academic and student life at Knox, from scholarships, faculty salaries, and student activities, to athletics and technology. With a more than $1 million increase in need for financial aid and scholarships this year, Knox has decided to earmark Knox Fund gifts for student financial aid, unless donors choose otherwise.

We hope that you enjoy speaking with these interesting students when they call and that you will consider supporting the Knox Fund.
