Applying for your Social Security Number

Congratulations on finding a campus job!

After finding a campus job, you should complete payroll information at the Business Office. You will then need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) at the Social Security Administration (SSA) in Galesburg. You'll need to take the following documents to apply:

  1. Passport, visa, and I-20
  2. I-94 record
  3. Employment verification letter from the Business Office
  4. SEVIS record verification letter from the Office of International Student Services
  5. SSN Application

When filling out the SSN application, reference the following advice:

  • You are a legal alien allowed to work
  • Use Knox K-148 as the mailing address P.O. Box
  • Your phone number for official purposes is 309-341-7000
  • You need only provide your parent's names
  • Remember to use the U.S. date convention of month/day/year

Once you have all your documents, go to the SSA. The SSA is located at 2060 Windish Drive, and you can get there by bus or taxi. The nearest bus stop is the KCCDD stop. You can get a copy of the bus route and schedule from the Office of International Student Services, and you can find the Galesburg SSA office hours here by entering the zip code 61401 in the search field.

You'll receive a receipt from the SSA when you apply for your SSN. Bring that receipt to the Business Office when you return to campus. A couple weeks after you apply for your SSN, your card will come to by mail to Knox, and at that time you'll need to let the Business Office know your SSN in order to finish your payroll information. Your payroll will then be complete for your current job and any other campus job you might get in the future.
