There are ample opportunities to enhance your studies in philosophy through independent research, off-campus study, and internships. These programs are integral to a Knox education, teaching you how to apply your skills in real world situations.

Research and Creative Work

Many of our majors -- and minors -- pursue College Honors or other research and creative projects. Some even present or perform their work at national and international conferences. Here are a few recent projects:

  • “Making Ourselves Flesh: Trans Phenomenology: A Merleau-Pontian Reclamation of the Transgender Narrative,” Nat Baldino ‘15.
  • “Authentic Social Relationships: Examining Bad Faith and Social Responsibility through Jean-Paul Sartre’s Woman on the Date,” Ruth Amerman ‘14
  • "Virtual Bodies and Immortal Flesh: What Transhumanism's Valuation of the Human Body Means for Human Life," Jennifer Lynn Kaufman '13.

Off-campus Study

Our students take advantage of the more than two dozen off-campus study programs. Here are a few of the places our students have studied in the past five years:

  • Scotland
  • England
  • Greece
  • Spain
  • France
  • Germany
  • India

Internships

There's no better way to explore the possibilities of life after Knox than internships. Philosophy majors have held internships at the Newberry Library in Chicago and Habitat for Humanity International in Americus, Georgia. Recent internships by philosophy students include:

  • Collaborative Researcher, Vovis Center for Research & Advanced Study, Knox College. Charles Ericksen ‘23, philosophy major.
