How does pre-health work at Knox?

While many of our pre-med and pre-health students choose to major in the sciences, it also is common to see a double major or minor in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Students interested in the social and psychological aspects of individual and community health may choose to minor in Health Studies. Learn more about the requirements of majors you might be interested in or start taking courses required for professional programs while exploring your interests en route to finding a major.

Recommended Pre-Medicine Coursework

Regardless of your major, you'll need to complete pre-medical courses in preparation for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and as prerequisites for admission to medical school programs.

In preparation for the MCAT, we suggest that you adopt the coursework required by the University of Illinois College of Medicine, which is consistent with the content of the exam:

• General biological sciences: BIOL 110, 120, 130
• General inorganic chemistry: CHEM 100A, 102A or CHEM 100, 101, 102
• Organic chemistry with laboratory: CHEM 211, 212
• General physics: PHYS 110, 120, 130
• One course of advanced-level biology
• Biochemistry: BCHM 301
• Three courses in the behavioral/social sciences (psychology, anthropology, or sociology)

In addition, in order to prepare for the MCAT, we recommend:

• Competency in statistics

Programs vary in their prerequisites.  You should consult the Medical School Admissions Guide (MSAR) or speak with your pre-health program advisor to determine specific coursework needed for admission.  Also, please note that the Knox-George Washington University early admission program has specific course requirements.
