Coach's Corner
Dear K Club Members,
Greetings from Knox men’s tennis. As we head into Winter Term, the players and I want to thank you for your continued support of Knox athletics. We could not give our student-athletes the opportunities they currently have without you.
We look forward to the upcoming 2012 season. We were not satisfied with our seventh place finish last year at the Midwest Conference tournament, so the team has been working hard in the offseason. We have added some new faces to the lineup. Senior captain Erik Hane (Littleton, CO), junior David Ham (Lakewood, WA), and junior Shaun Mulani (Bourbonnais, IL) will be joined this year by three talented first-year players: Walter Palmer (Wilmette, IL), Karolis Ruzgas (Downers Grove, IL) and Jonathan Ng (Hong Kong, China).
At the 2011 USTA/ITA NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships hosted by Washington University in St. Louis last fall, Palmer and Ng won their first round matches before falling in a tough second round. Ng continued his doubles play success by winning his second round match to record the men's tennis program's first singles win at the ITAs in four years. Hane and Ruzgas defeated a duo from Greenville College for the first Knox men's tennis doubles victory at the ITAs in more than a decade.
Empowered by this success, members of the team have taken it upon themselves to hit the courts every day and work out as a team three days a week. It's going to be an exciting year, and we expect to move up in the standings at the Midwest Conference tournament in May.
The season begins February 4 at the University of Dubuque, followed by a match on February 18 at Carroll University. Once again, we will travel to Florida over spring break, but with one major difference this year -- we will fly! The team has elected to raise money in the coming months to fly, and I look forward to their continued fund-raising efforts. The guys are anxious, and they expect to have their most competitive season in recent memory.
We encourage you to be part of it. If you find yourself in the area for any of our matches, please stop by and watch this motivated and talented team play. View the season schedule.
