Ethereal temples, jewel box pagodas, shogun castles, and breathtaking vistas epitomize the culture and natural beauty of Japan. This 13-day, 12-night land and sea voyage takes you to some of the most iconic sites along the Inland Sea of Japan and South Korea, featuring an 8-night, all-inclusive cruise on the deluxe expedition small ship Heritage Adventurer.

Your faculty host is Michael Schneider, provost and dean of Knox College and creator of Knox’s immersive Japan Term. A faculty member at Knox since 1992, he directed the Eleanor Stellyes Center for Global Studies; twice served as resident director for the ACM/GLCA Japan Study program in Tokyo; and chaired the history, Asian studies, and international studies programs. Michael is an expert in East Asian history with a focus on the international and intercultural relations of modern Japan. His research interests cover a diverse range of topics from Japanese colonial policy to liberal economic theory and the history of food.

Travel with Knox to the Great Lakes

Cruising the Great Lakes
September 25–October 2, 2023
 

Alumni and friends enjoyed a cruise around all five of the Great Lakes—Ontario, Erie, Superior, Huron, and Michigan—when the region’s foliage began to put on its breathtaking, vibrant show. The travelers visited some of North America’s most alluring towns, visionary cities, and magnificent coastal scenery. They had the opportunity to take a horse-drawn carriage ride along the picturesque streets of quaint Mackinac Island to the iconic Grand Hotel. Cruise the protected waters near Tobermory, Ontario, Canada; transit the historic Soo Locks at Sault Sainte Marie and the Welland Canal near Niagara Falls; and experience Detroit’s fascinating cultural legacy at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Mansion, and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. The group included Brian Williams ’86 as the alumni host who brought his passion for arts, culture, travel, and history to this program.

Alumni Travel Circumnavigation of IcelandCircumnavigation of Iceland

Alumni travelers enjoyed the "Land of Fire and Ice," one of the world's most enchanting and distinctive destinations, on a seven-night circumnavigation cruise of this stunning Nordic island nation. Travelers had opportunities to watch for orca, humpback whales, and rare migratory birds; and see landscapes of ancient Viking ruins and crystalline glaciers atop simmering volcanoes. They crossed the Arctic Circle on Grímsey Island and cruised along the coast of Surtsey, one of Earth's youngest islands and a UNESCO World Heritage site; and explored the majestic vista of a former lava lake and marveled at dramatic Goðafoss, the "Waterfall of the Gods."

Alumni Travel: Greek Isles

Ancient Greece Aegean Odyssey
November 7–15, 2019

Alumni and friends traveled with Professors Brenda and Stephen Fineberg for an unparalleled and comprehensive, nine-day tour of Athens, Greece, and the the islands of Delos, Mykonos, Pátmos, Rhodes, and Santorini, and the Peloponnese Peninsula. They visited extraordinary Meteora, where 14th- and 15th-century monasteries stand high atop natural sandstone pinnacles, and walked through legendary sites of antiquity—including the ancient citadel of Mycenae and historic Epidaurus.

Travelers were able to hear first-hand from local residents about what it's like to live and work on the shores of the Aegean Sea, and had the opportunity for personal exploration of Athens before the cruise or Ancient Olympia upon return.

Knox alumni and friends joined Emeritus President Teresa Amott and fellow travelers for a voyage from Barcelona to Lisbon. Along the way, enjoying stunning scenery and visiting four UNESCO World Heritage sites during daily port calls and included excursions.
