Winter Brings Personnel Changes at Knox

Winter term at Knox ... no doubt your son or daughter is settled and already working hard! We wanted you to be aware of a few changes in the staffing of the College so you know whom to contact in the future.

Lori Schroeder Haslem (309-341-7214), associate professor of English, was appointed to the position of associate dean of the College. She succeeds Stephen Bailey (309-341-7387), who has served as associate dean since 1984 -- the longest serving associate dean in Knox's history. Bailey has been appointed director of Knox's new Center for Research and Advanced Study. Both appointments were effective as of January 1, 2010. Read more about Haslem's and Bailey’s new duties.

Vicki Sibley, office coordinator in the Office of Student Development, retired from the College in December. Her successor is Susan Day (309-341-7220). Be sure to greet Susan when you stop by the Student Development Office!

Jimmy Stewart, assistant director of campus life, left us in mid-January to take a position in Chicago. We are searching for a replacement, but rest assured that your questions will be answered by others in the Campus Life Office if you call 309-341-7527!

Snow Emergency Updates

Students will be notified via e-mail when the city declares a snow emergency. If two or more inches of new snow have accumulated, this requires the removal of all vehicles from the streets. If it snows, students must move their vehicles to any of the College parking lots. Once the streets have been plowed, students may return vehicles to the street. Local radio stations will also announce when a snow emergency is in effect. The fine for not moving a vehicle is $25.00 plus towing charges.

Special Updates

H1N1 Vaccine Available for Knox Students

The Knox County Health Department is now offering the H1N1 flu vaccine on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday, 9 am - 4 pm. The H1N1 vaccine is available in both forms:

  • FluMist -- for those who do NOT have any underlying medical conditions (such as asthma or diabetes), are pregnant, or have received the seasonal flu mist vaccine in the past 28 days.
  • Injectable -- for those who DO have underlying medical conditions (such as asthma or diabetes), are pregnant, or have received the seasonal flu mist vaccine in the past 28 days.

The H1N1 vaccine is FREE. The Knox County Health Department is at 1361 W. Fremont Street, just west of Galesburg High School. Everyone in the Knox community is encouraged to get the vaccine and to take precautions to avoid getting or spreading the flu.

Security Cameras to be Installed on Campus

For several months, a working group from the Office of Student Development and Finance & Administrative Services has been developing plans for a campus video security system with video cameras at several points both on the perimeter and within the campus. The sole purpose of such a system is to enhance campus safety by deterring unlawful acts and increasing the likelihood of apprehending perpetrators. Students, including representatives of the Student Senate, have been involved in discussions about the system. Last week, President Roger Taylor authorized moving ahead with the installation of the system with plans that it be operating by spring term.

Repertory Term 2010 Begins

Rep Term 2010Repertory Theatre Term, known informally as "Rep Term," was created at Knox in 1970 by emeritus professors Robert Whitlatch, Ivan Davidson and former professor Peter B. Young. Held every three years, the program allows students to spend an entire ten-week term working exclusively in theatre. The students take three theatre classes and work on all of the performance and production tasks found in a professional repertory theatre company.
