Family & Friends Weekend 2009

Family & Friends Weekend will be held from October 9-11, 2009. We hope you are able to attend the special activities planned for the weekend. Here are a few reminders for parents:

  • There is no charge for Family & Friends Weekend, but we do like to get an idea of how many families to expect, so please register online before you come to campus. Last minute attendees are welcome too!  All attendees should stop by the registration table on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning in Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union, to pick up the latest schedule and information.
  • If you are attending classes on Friday, please check the online schedule to see which classes are open to visitors. Please be aware that students might be taking midterms and quizzes, which is why we check first with professors to see if it is all right to have class visitors. We have tried to find a variety of classes that would be of interest to parents.
  • The Spoon River Drive and Knox County Scenic Drive take place during Family & Friends Weekend. We will have information at the registration tables if you are interested in attending either of these events.
  • Knox does not provide shuttle service from the Peoria and Moline airports for Family & Friends Weekend. Both airports are served by major car rental companies, and Maple City Cab will pick up passengers at both airports for transport to Galesburg. Call 309-734-6369 for details and current fees.
  • Is your student missing your home cooking? We are taking recipes from parents, and any recipe submitted will be open for consideration to be served sometime throughout the year. Please e-mail us your recipe, and we will add it to the list. Your student may get a nice surprise when his or her favorite dish is featured!
For more information about the weekend, please visit the Family & Friends Weekend Web page or contact Jimmy Stewart, assistant director of campus life, at 309-341-7303 or Jennifer Gallas, parents program coordinator, at 309-341-7957.
Special Updates

Flu Update

The H1N1 virus is a concern for all of the Knox Community. Please know that as of September 30, we have NO confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus on the Knox College campus. A task force has been working hard to plan a strategy for the campus in case someone should contract the H1N1 virus.

Please visit the flu update Web page for the latest updates on H1N1 and suggestions for prevention and what students should do if they fall ill with any flu or cold symptoms.
Parents News & Notes

Information Please...

Because we know parents want to keep up on what's going on at Knox, Xavier Romano, vice president for student development and dean of students, has created a new page on the Web site, "Thoughts From the Dean of Students", where he can keep in touch with parents. He'll offer comments about what is going on around campus, as well as make you aware of important news that might affect your student. The page will be updated a few times each term, so A Knox student reads The Knox Studentcheck back for updates! A link to the page can be found in the "Featured Pages" section of the Parents Gateway.

Another way to find out what's going on around campus is through our student publications.
Catch is Knox College's award-winning biannual journal of creative work. The magazine is entirely student-run, from the head editors to the proofreaders. The Knox Student (TKS) is the college's official student newspaper. Published weekly, TKS has been student-written, student-run, and student-read since 1878. Learn more about Catch, The Knox Student, and other Knox student media.

Red Room Tutoring

Students study in the Red Room and Seymour LibrarySometimes students need a little assistance with projects, papers, and other homework -- and the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) writing instructors and tutors are here to help.

The “Red Room” tutoring program, located in the Muelder Reading (or “Red”) Room of Seymour Library, is a great way to get some assistance. The Center's Red Room Tutorial Tables are staffed by well-trained peer tutors in mathematics, modern languages, and the sciences on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 7-9:00 p.m. In addition, the CTL has expanded the Red Room program to Sunday and Monday nights with "Writer's Block," a program to assist students with writing papers of any type or at any stage of development. Students may also come in to the center office anytime between 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to set up appointments with the coordinators. Learn more about the CTL.

All the World's a Stage for Physics and Theatre Double Major

Keegan Siebken '11To be or not to be, that is the question -- or not.

When Knox junior Keegan Siebken was in high school and visiting college campuses, he says many had a problem with theatre and physics as a double major and told him it couldn't be done. But not Knox College. "When I came to Knox, and said what do you think about theater and physics as a double major? They said 'That's not a problem.'"

He also noticed Knox students seemed more engaged in what they were doing than those at other colleges. "I got a better overall feel of the Knox campus. They had a really great balance of hanging out and relaxing, and getting all of their work finished. And, everybody wants everyone else to succeed. There is no sense of needing others to fail so I can get ahead. I told my mom to put down a deposit the very next day." Read more about Keegan.

Student Receives History Research Fellowship

Margaret SpiegelMargaret Spiegel '10 traveled 1,000 miles to a prestigious summer research fellowship at Historic Deerfield, Inc. -- a museum and historic site in Massachusetts. But her love of history was inspired in part by something much closer to home -- the Bishop Hill State Historic Site, just minutes from where she grew up in Kewanee, Illinois.

"I distinctly remember my fourth grade field trip to Bishop Hill," Spiegel says. "It was my first experience with 'living history.' Classmates and I dressed in period costume, and we actually performed tasks the colonists did. We baked with an iron stove, churned butter, picked and processed rhubarb, and hauled water with a yoke and wooden buckets."

Similar to Bishop Hill, Historic Deerfield promotes tourism at its restored 18th-century houses. The Historic Deerfield Summer Fellowship program is a nationally competitive museum studies internship that accepts only seven undergraduates a year. Read more about Margaret.
