Gabe Moreno '14

Like Father, Like Son:
Gabe Moreno '14 Continues Family Legacy at Knox

Gabe Moreno '14 is a member of three Prairie Fire athletic teams, owns several of the top performances by a runner in school history, and, after just one year, is carrying on a family legacy on the track.

Gabe's parents, Alex '93 and Debbie Moreno '89, were both student-athletes at Knox.  Alex set several all-time top 10 marks in both indoor and outdoor track and field and is among the best cross country performers in school history. Twice during 2011 outdoor season, Gabe beat times established by his father, Alex, on the all-time performance lists for the 5K and 10K.  Learn more about Gabe and the Moreno family legacy.

Coach's Corner

Dear K Club Members,

Greetings! I hope this letter finds you well. As the spring sports season concludHead Coach Dan Zierfuss; Cross Country, Indoor & Outdoor Track & Fieldes at Knox, our student-athletes have certainly had some remarkable performances this year. I want to thank all of you for your continued support of Knox College Prairie Fire Athletics. Your contributions to our sports programs have greatly benefitted the experiences of all of our student-athletes.

Completing my first year as the head track and field coach of our men’s and women’s programs, our teams went on to rewrite the history books in 2011, as we had a combined total of 67 additions to our all-time top 10 lists for indoor and outdoor track and field, along with three new school records.  First-year standout Gabe Moreno ‘14 (Galesburg, Illinois) broke school records in the men’s mile (4:35.08) and the men’s 3,000 meter run (8:58.55). On the women’s side, our sprint medley relay team of captain Claire Knowlton ‘11 (Westlake, OH), Kristi Weller ‘12 (Cullom, Illinois), Chloe BoClaire Knowlton '11, Kristi Weller '12, Chole Bohm '11, Emma Swanson '12hm ‘11 (Lake Forest, Illinois), and Emma Swanson ‘12 (West Des Moines, Iowa) broke the record at the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a fourth place time of 4:19.81.

The outdoor track and field season recently ended with several strong performances by our young and talented squads. On the men’s side, Moreno had two fifth place finishes in the conference in the men’s 5,000m and 10,000m runs and, along with sprinter/jumper Joe Puntoriero ‘13 (Cheektowaga, New York), who placed fifth in the 200m dash (23.54) and eighth in the long jump (21’ 7 ¼”), scored individual points for our men’s squad. On the women’s side, Knowlton had an eighth place finish in the 100m dash (13.49), and both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams finished fifth.

I look forward to seeing you on the Knox campus sometime next year for one of our home track and field meets!

Sincerely,

Dan Zierfuss signature
